ABOUT DAVID B. ROTHMAN
David Rothman earned his BA (1974) and JD (1977) at the University of Florida. His began his legal career as an assistant state attorney in Miami.
In 1980, David, John Thornton, Jr., now a circuit court judge, and Stuart Adelstein established the law firm which now bears the name Rothman & Associates, P.A.
Federal Judge Federico Moreno and Kevin Emas, Chief Judge of the Third District Court of Appeal were partners of the firm.
The firm practices in the areas of criminal defense in State and Federal matters and professional responsibility (representing lawyers and judges who have been grieved; rendering expert opinions in the area of legal ethics and criminal matters; representing law firms and lawyers in matters involving issues of court imposed sanctions and disqualification and representing applicants to The Florida Bar).
David has tried in excess of 100 jury trials in State and Federal Courts, in multiple jurisdictions around the United States, and within the State of Florida.
David is Board Certified by The Florida Bar and the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Criminal Trial.
He has been President of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and of the Dade County Bar Association.
He is a past member of the board of The Florida Bar Foundation, a present member and past Chair of the board of the Innocence Project of Florida, and past Chair of the Criminal Law Section of The Florida Bar.
From 1999-2011, David was a member of The Florida Bar Board of Governors and, each of his dozen years on the Board he was a member, and for the last 6 years on the Board chair or co-chair of the Disciplinary Review Committee of the Board.
He very often lectures on legal ethics. David is AV Rated by Martindale Hubbell, listed by Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, and Florida Trend as a member of the Florida Legal Elite.
In 2009, David was awarded The Florida Bar President’s Award of Merit; in 2011, David was awarded the inaugural Tony Boggs Award for his contributions to The Florida Bar grievance process; in 2014, David received the Dade County Bar’s highest award, the David W. Dyer Professionalism Award; in 2017, he received the Dade County Bar’s Criminal Justice Award; in 2018, he received the President’s Award for The Florida Bar Foundation; and in 2019 David received the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ highest award, the Stephen M. Goldstein Criminal Justice Award.
For more than three decades, David has taught litigation skills as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Miami. He and his wife Jeanne have been married for 45 years and have 4 children and 3 grandchildren, Mae, Cal and Finley.

For 6 of these years, he served as either chair or co- chair of the Disciplinary Review Committee, the Board committee responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on lawyer discipline cases that came before the Board on their way to the Florida Supreme Court.
In Mr. Rothman’s 12 years on the Board, more than 2,000 lawyer discipline cases were reviewed by the Disciplinary Review Committee of the Board of Governors.
